At LashLuxury, we’re eyelash growth experts. Afterall, it took us years of research to perfect our daily eyelash serum which has helped thousands of women boost their eyelashes. Oils for lash growth are an easy win, as long as you don't have eyelash extensions.
We took great pains to research the benefits of ingredient like peptides, vitamins and oils for lash growth.
Throughout our research we came across some interesting information about different oils that may help with lash growth. Even though we do not use any oils in our natural lash serum, because that would exclude anyone who has eyelash extensions from using our product, we wanted to share our research with you.
Here is a roundup of 5 oils for lash growth, and whether or not they work!
Castor Oil
Castor oil is the most commonly referenced oil reported by some to aid in eyelash growth. It is a common ingredient in hair cosmetics because of its hydrating and nourishing properties. Castor oil benefits hair and eyebrows as well.
Castor oil comes from the beans of castor trees. It is a vegetable oil and full of fatty acids that are great for our skin. Some commonly believed skin benefits include:
- Treating acne
- Treating inflammation
- Reducing wrinkles
- Reducing age spots
- Hydrating dry skin
In one study, castor oil was actually shown to contribute to “hair felting” and requires anyone afflicted by this condition to cut off the affected hair.
Using castor oil for eyelash growth has some self reported benefits but experts believe the benefit is mostly due to your eyelashes appearing thicker and fuller when coated with castor oil. It is NOT clinically proven to grow your lashes and it does not belong in serums.
Argan Oil
Argan oil is a plant oil from the argan tree which is native to Morocco. It consists of fatty acids which are mainly used in the production of soap and lubricants.
Argan oil is rich in vitamin E. Vitamin E is full of antioxidants that can protect your skin from damaging free radicals.
Argan oil is used on hair as a moisturizer and to protect the scalp from environmental damage. It will do the same on your lashes and might even help reduce lash shedding and breakage.
Almond oil
Almond oil is used to soften and strengthen hair. It is full of biotin which is necessary for strong hair and nails. Biotin is a an incredible lash boosting vitamin.
While we couldn’t find any clinical trials that support almond oil’s lash growing powers, we did learn that almond oil can help hair become stronger and less prone to breakage. Both of these benefits would extend to your eyelashes and help keep them from becoming brittle.
You’ll only need a little bit of almond oil to coat your lashes with. If you have a nut allergy however, make sure to keep any nut oils away from your skin!
Coconut oil
Thicker, longer lashes and smelling like a tropical beach all day? Yes, please!
Coconut oil is a classic home remedy for softening and moisturizing hair. It is also fantastic to use on your skin because it absorbs so quickly.
Coconut oil is moist definitely a super food but the jury is out whether it is a natural lash booster. Coconut oil will help increase sheen of your lashes but we couldn’t find any concrete evidence that it helped with growth.
Emu oil
Emu oil has been used for over 40,000 years in Australia. It comes from the Emu, a flightless bird, native to Australia.
Before we get into the reported benefits, we need to clearly state that we do not condone the use of Emu oil. Lashluxury is a cruelty free brand. None of our products are tested on animals and we advocate for plant-based cosmetics.
If you insist on trying emu oil, here are some of the reported benefits:
- Relieve minor aches and pains
- Heal minor wounds
- Protects skin
- Anti-inflammatory
- Moisturize skin
While we did see some companies suggest that emu oil can help with lash and hair growth, we’re suggesting you stay away from this product.
So - what oil for lash growth will you use?
Using oils for lash growth has become quite common. Plant based oils will certainly help moisturize and coat your eyelashes to improve their sheen.
Many natural oils are full of nutritional benefits and we do believe that castor oil has certain hair related benefits.
If you wear eyelash extensions, we do not recommend putting oil on your extensions. Almost all oils will dissolve the glue used to attach the extensions to your lashes and dissolve the bond.
